Helicopter rescue high on Diablo

May 29 2005

random trip report
Rich Kraft, Rob Vaterlaus and I drive to Mt. Diablo and go on a brisk 3-hour hike on the Falls trail, which goes by 3 medium-size waterfalls and several smaller ones, then cut over to the Back Creek trail on the way down.

As we set off we see two helicopters circling the area we're about to hike. A mile up the road, one of the helicopters has landed and an authority figure says a woman fell and broke her leg. The helicopters circle endlessly, making one hell of a racket. Rich complains about the noise to another authority figure, and I tell him that if it was him lying at the bottom of a ravine with a broken leg he wouldn't be complaining, so shut the #*&$ up.

A bit later we see one of the choppers winch up an occupied stretcher. It looks like the woman fell quite a ways down a steep slope. Seems like the chopper is slightly overkill, but what the heck.

Anyway, it's a great hike on a gorgeous day, marred only by our failure to find soft-serve ice cream on the way home. I'd have more pictures except my Flash card was full and it took me a long time to figure out how to delete stuff.
